My Journey to Becoming a Fashion Designer
I was just in Grade 6 when I first tried my hand at sewing. I remember choosing a bold turquoise fabric and deciding—quite confidently—that I was going to make a pair of pants. My mother gently warned me that pants were far too complicated for a beginner. But me being me—I made them anyway. That project led to tears, a few heated moments, and a lot of frustration… but I persisted.

Back then, there was no YouTube to guide me. I taught myself everything I could by studying pattern instructions and paging through any sewing handbook I could find. By Grade 10, I enrolled in a course on Italian dressmaking—and that changed everything. Suddenly, I could bring any sketch or picture to life with fabric and thread.

That same year, I helped a friend of my mother sew two wedding gowns for her daughters. A relative from Kathu came all the way to Evander to work with us. We spent hours hand-stitching what felt like millions of pearls and sequins. It was in those moments—surrounded by satin, sparkle, and purpose—that I knew: this is my calling.

Today, after more than two decades in the fashion industry, I’m still just as passionate about the magic of design. As the founder and head designer at Karen Couturier, I create custom bridal and evening gowns that reflect each woman’s unique story, style, and beauty. My vision is to make every client feel seen, celebrated, and confident—because it’s never just about the dress. It’s about the transformation. And I consider it a privilege to be part of that journey.
